Old-Fashioned Ethics and Common-Sense Metaphysics: With Some of Their Applications
William Thomas Thornton published Old-Fashioned Ethics and Common-Sense Metaphysics in 1907.
William Thomas Thornton's 1907 book examines the relationship between common sense metaphysics and everyday ethics. He argues that a sound understanding of reality, grounded in what we can readily perceive, forms the basis for a robust ethical system. The work considers how metaphysical assumptions influence our moral judgments and explores practical applications of these ideas. Thornton suggests that many ethical confusions arise from faulty metaphysical premises. He aims to clarify these by returning to basic principles of existence and perception. The book invites readers to consider how a more grounded view of the world can lead to clearer ethical reasoning. It addresses those interested in the philosophical underpinnings of morality and the nature of reality.

As someone who reads a lot in this field, I can be picky. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
Needed this for my research. The ideas are old but land with surprising force today. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. It assumes more background than a beginner might have. Good, with the caveats above.
Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. I appreciated how the argument builds steadily from first principles.
Perfect companion for my morning study sessions. There's real depth here that reveals itself on a second reading. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Happy enough with the purchase.
Exactly what I was looking for. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. You can tell why this work has endured. Great value for what you get.
